This symbol was prepared for the competition named “Designing New Symbol of Turkish Lira(TL)” was organized by the Central Bank of the Turkish Republic. The committee was looking for a modern and simple design that reflects Turkish character best. The way of my thinking, It is not possible to consider the Turkish character separate from Ottoman character. With this background, I designed a symbol which is a simple and modern stylization of Suleiman the Magnificent’s tughra. Tughra was a signature of Ottoman sultan that almost all sultans had their own during their reign. It was used on official papers, edicts and especially on coins to assing when the coin was minted.
